BACKGROUND: For more than 15 years Julian residents have been planting
naturalizing daffodils throughout the town and along the slopes surrounding the
town. By now there are millions growing in the area. This started as a project by
Sally Snipes, a local gardener and artist, who wanted to honor the memory of her
father. Sally recruited friends and neighbors to help with the project by ordering
bushels of bulbs for personal use, giving Sally additional credit of bushels of bulbs
to plant for the community. The project continues to this day. Every fall Julian
residents order bushels of daffodils through Sally to plant in their own yards and
to donate to the larger project. Visitors to Julian during February and March are
treated to a dramatic display of the blooming bulbs.

Can You Help ?
There is a group of young
adolescents ages 12 to 18 in
Santa Ana at a place called
Phoenix House, a drug and
alcohol rehab . They are
usually sent there by the
courts.  The  staff is doing a
very good job of
rehabilitating these young
people. Most of them have
not had much of a family life.
 During the time they are
there they are taught the
value of family and of social
responsibility. Martha Wida
has volunteered there for
several years with the U C
Master Gardeners teaching
them gardening.

At the moment they are in
need of wood to make more
square foot gardening boxes.
 They hope to have one
raised bed for each student.
(45) The beds are four feet
square and about 6" high.
They  will consider anything
anyone has.

Please contact Martha
directly if you have anything
to offer.

Looking for toads -
I am hoping someone will contact me who can catch a few excess
toads from their yard and put them in a box for me to pickup.
The yard they will live in is chemical and pesticide free, huge,
shady and watered, and safe on a private road.
The senior toad who lived here for many, many years has since
disappeared, though we suspect he has died of old age.
Thanks!!!!
